Ealing has several very distinct and well-loved neighbourhoods that are historically significant and remain popular today. The Haymills Estate, situated in the Hanger Hill area of Ealing is one of those much sought after areas.
Although, the adjoining area was acquired by the Acton Aerodrome for manufacturing of the Alliance Aeroplane Company in the early years of the 20th century, the word ‘Hanger’ is not actually related to an airplane hangar but rather derives from a wood on the side of a hill or bank.
Hanger Hill House built in 1790 was thus named by local landowners the Wood family who owned the property until 1874.
In the early years of the 20th century, the mansion became a golf clubhouse, by which time the adjoining fields were taken over for airline manufacturing. When Western Avenue was built the land was acquired for development.
The Hanger Hill estate was one of three built in north-west London by Messrs Haymills in the 1920s and 30s who gave the Haymills Esates their names and even used the names of their own home towns for street names such as Boileau Road.
At the time that they were built, the homes in the Haymills Estate were not considered cheap and had a reputation for being well-designed and sturdily built. The consulting architect on the project was Herbert Welch from the highly respected practice of Welch and Lander which designed Park Royal Station, garage and public house, and Hanger Court (with Herbert Cachemaille-Day who went on to design many churches including the extension to St Mary's, West Twyford).
The Haymills Estate is remarkable amongst London suburbs of the 1930s for the large number of buildings designed by a single practice and in a unique layout of a series of concentric crescents.
The original Haymills Estate sales brochures noted that the main part of the estate is 'on the southerly slope of Hanger Hill, which rises to 200 feet, bounded to the west and south by a magnificent belt of stately trees, which form a fine setting to the estate…There was also a tennis club with five all-weather courts” and "close proximity to Ealing which has always been noted for its excellent shopping facilities."
