Moving home is a huge life event, and yet it’s often something that involves quick decision making. Needing to think on your feet doesn’t mean you can’t shop around to find a great estate agent, and here are three ways you can go about doing that.
Ask for recommendations
For your first port of call, ask friends or family who have moved recently who they used, and whether they would recommend them. There’s nothing quite as trustworthy as a personal recommendation. If no-one you know has moved house recently in your area, ask the question on a local Facebook group. It’s not quite as good as a personal recommendation, but people love to be helpful, and in a long list of recommendations, you’re likely to see the same names crop up again and again.
This will then help you know which agents to ask for valuations.
Check out how they advertise their properties
Before you sign a contract with any agent, don’t just ask them about their property marketing, take a look for yourself.
Do they actively promote properties on social media? Do they use property portals like Rightmove and Zoopla? Are the photographs of properties they currently have up for sale professional and enticing? How do they talk about the properties? Would you be happy if they wrote similar things about your home for sale? It’s all food for thought.
How long have their staff worked there?
This is always a good thing to take a look at, to get an idea of the company ethos. If you don’t feel comfortable asking about staff turnover outright, you can always do a bit of sleuthing. Have a look at social media, or reviews which mention staff by name directly, and you’ll be able to see if there are names who have been there for a number of years.
At Northfields we’re really proud that a large proportion of our team have been with the company for years. Managing Director, Richard Palfreeman, provides awards and incentive, as well as taking staff on a yearly trip.

Our team reviews speak for themselves
We're so lucky to have a team filled with kind, caring, hardworking and knowledgeable individuals. But you don't need us to tell you that,
Worked with Edyta on a local purchase. Incredible service and communication. I cannot recommend her and Northfields enough.
Just wanted to say a big thank you to Northfields for helping us buy our very first home! Edyta was the first person we met at Northfields and showed us the property during our initial viewing. She was absolutely lovely, welcoming, enthusiastic and instantly made us feel comfortable and left us with a very positive impression of the company. She was extremely prompt when following up with us and helped us secure our offer. Our estate agent, Amir, has been absolutely outstanding from the very beginning. He personally saw the process through until the very end despite the fact that his job role had changed. He was extremely positive and professional and went out of his way to help both us and the seller of the property. Amir spent a huge amount of time and took a great deal of care trying to ensure the sale went smoothly, often working late and giving us much needed reassurance, expertise, support and laughs along the way. Our transaction was not as straightforward as we expected, and I can safely say we would not have been able to complete without him! Amir is an absolute asset to Northfields and I hope he is recognised for all his efforts. We will definitely be using Northfields again!
I recently purchased a property listed with Northfields (Pitshanger), and the firm has been a delight to deal with. I had the pleasure of having Heather Davis be the point of contact throughout the process providing the most professional and commendable experience. Heather was highly responsive, efficient, and made sure all parties involved were kept up-to-date with developments. Overall, a delight to engage with in what would otherwise be deemed a stressful house buying experience!
